Driver Leaves One Pedestrian Dead, Six Others Injured in World Cup host city

A car ploughed into a group of pedestrians killing one and injuring six in a horror crash in  the World Cup host city.
The crash, in Sochi, was captured on CCTV and sees the car mount the pavement before striking a group of people.
The crash took place days before hosts Russia play Croatia in a World Cup quarter final and is believed to have occurred after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
In the footage, the Chevrolet Lanos goes behind the railings meant to protect walkers from the traffic and wipes out a group innocently walking by.
Flames shoot from the car’s bonnet as debris flies across the road, after the crash which happened this afternoon.
Police have said a 63-year-old local man was killed and three more were hospitalised, although their conditions are unknown.
The male driver swerved across the road “having fallen asleep at the wheel”, it has been reported.
He survived the crash, unharmed.
Sochi, the city’s premier seaside resort, will be the venue for Russia’s quarter final game against Croatia on Saturday at 7pm UK time.
The car was on the Batumi highway when it veered to the wrong aside of the road before hitting the pedestrians.
Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
